Standard #6

STANDARD 6: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • The teacher candidate models effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques with students, colleagues, and families to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

Alignment to Standard:

  • Providing diverse means of communication is essential, particularly for young learners as they develop their communication and vocabulary skills. At this stage of their development, it is important for students to have various methods available to express themselves, whether through verbal, non-verbal or alternative communication tools. This flexibility enables them to effectively communicate their needs, desires, and ideas to adults or teachers, fostering a sense of autonomy and confidence. By offering multiple ways for communication, we ensure that each child is supported in expressing themselves in a way that is most comfortable and effective for them, ultimately enhancing their ability to engage meaningfully in the learning process.

Reflection:

  • Within the classroom, we utilize a variety of visual aids to support communication and learning. These include visuals for responding to yes/no questions, options to help students resolve difficulties when interacting with peers, and communication devices for students who benefit from additional support. These resources are designed to ensure all students can effectively express themselves and engage in classroom activities.
