Sense of Context

Objective:

Graduates will be able to use reflection to articulate their role serving others in educational contexts.

Statement:

As reflective scholar-practitioners, teacher candidates develop a Sense of Context characterized by the ability to critically examine varied systems and settings in which teaching and learning takes place. This includes an exploration of the cultures of individuals, families, learning settings, communities; a study of relationships and communication within and across settings; and an examination of past, present, and future influences on individuals, families, learning settings, communities, and the broader society.

  MEES STANDARDS

05: Positive Classroom Environment

    • The teacher uses an understanding of individual/group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages active engagement in learning, positive social interaction, and self-motivation.

08: Professionalism

    • The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually assesses the effects of choices and actions on others. The teacher actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally in order to improve learning for all students.

Description:

    • In my “Survival Guide,” I articulate my educational philosophy and the foundational beliefs that guide my approach to teaching. This document encompasses my experiences in previous schools and teaching placements, outlining the strategies I intend to employ within my classroom to foster a positive learning environment. I detail the goals, expectations, and rules I plan to implement to ensure a safe and supportive atmosphere for both students and their families. Additionally, I explore various strategies for engaging with students’ families, recognizing the importance of building strong home-school connections. The guide also includes reflective components that will inform my ongoing professional development and teaching practices as I progress in my career.

Goals:

1.) I will utilize my survival guide as a dynamic resource in my classroom, revising and updating it regularly to reflect the evolving nature of my beliefs and ideas as an educator.

    • As I strive to engage more deeply with my “Survival Guide,” I recognize the importance of this process in enhancing my effectiveness as an educator. By continually reflecting on my practices and seeking ways to improve, I will not only support my students’ learning but also progress toward my professional goals as a reflective practitioner.

    • 08: I am regularly revising my survival guide to adapt to the changing needs of my students at each school. This ongoing process allows me to incorporate resources tailored to support the diverse learning requirements of each student. Additionally, I am committed to my professional growth by collobaring with my teacher cohort, which enhances my strategies ad approaches to effectively meet the needs of my students.
