WELCOME TO MY TEACHING PORTFOLIO!

My name is Katie Houck, and I am a 2025 graduate of Saint Louis University, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Education with dual concentrations in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education, both focusing on children from birth to third grade.

Since the second grade, I have aspired to become a teacher, inspired by the profound impact my own educators had on my life. I am passionate about fostering an environment where young minds are encouraged to dream big and pursue their goals. I am committed to shaping the educational experiences of my students and empowering them to reach their full potential.

Field Experience:

  • Almost 3 years of working experience at BJC Hospital Daycare with children from birth to 5 years of age.
  • Over 3 years of observing at schools in the Saint Louis area, as well as a year of practicums and a semester of student teaching
  • Volunteer for Special Needs Soccer Association which is a non-profit soccer program for young people with disabilities.

Collaboration

I value collaboration within my classroom and community because it enriches the learning experience for all involved. Working together fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose, allowing students to learn from one another’s perspectives and strengths. Collaboration encourages open communication and builds trust, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and asking questions. Additionally, partnering with families and community members extends learning beyond the classroom, providing real-world connections and resources that enhance education. To sum up, collaboration cultivates critical skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and empathy. This prepares students for future success while creating a vibrant, engaged learning community.

Inclusion/Kindness

I value inclusion and kindness in my classroom because they are the basics to creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment. Inclusion ensures that every student feels respected and valued, regardless of their background or abilities, which fosters a sense of belonging. Kindness promotes empathy and understanding, encouraging students to treat one another with respect and compassion. Together, these principles help build strong relationships, enhance collaboration, and create a safe space where all students can thrive, express themselves, and reach their full potential. Ultimately, fostering inclusion and kindness creates a positive classroom culture that benefits everyone.

Patience

I value patience because it is the cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. By embodying patience, I create an environment where students feel safe to explore, ask questions, and learn at their own pace. Patience is one of my values because it enhances their learning experience, allowing them to engage more deeply with the material and develop confidence in their abilities. Additionally, patience fosters a positive and supportive classroom atmosphere, where collaboration and open communication thrive.
